Background

The Photo School (TPS) was founded by artist and educator Gideon Vass in response to two clear and persistent problems with mainstream art education. First, the financial barriers that make it inaccessible for many aspiring creatives. And second, how most art institutions struggle to prepare students for life as an artist, leaving graduates without the tools or perspective needed to sustain an art practice long term. TPS was designed to address these issues, offering holistic and accessible art education that is centred on the lived experience of the artist.

The first few years as an artist are often overwhelming, uncertain, and isolating. Limited time, support, resources, and energy, coupled with high expectations, can make artists feel deflated and disheartened, causing many to drift away from their practice. The artists who continue are not necessarily those with greatest artistic potential, but those who find ways to work around these limitations, let go of rigid ideals, and integrate their practice into their life (and/or those that are financially supported).

TPS exists to help artists lay those foundations, identify and navigate the challenges, discover a sustainable approach, and develop as photographic practitioners.
